Hospitals With SANE Nurses In North Carolina

We wanted to figure out what type of care hospitals in North Carolina provided to sexual assault survivors. We couldn’t find comprehensive data, so we set out to make our own.

We wanted to find out how many hospitals had certified sexual assault nurse examiners, or SANE nurses, and sexual assault kits available; how many had kits available to be performed by other medical professionals; and what hospitals don’t collect sexual assault kits at all.

We reached out to the 121 hospitals licensed within the state of North Carolina by the Department of Health and Human Services as of July 2018. Of those, 63 responded that they had both SANE nurses and kits available. Mission Health, a hospital system in the western part of the state said five of its hospitals don’t have SANE nurses, but that the SANE nurses at its hospital in Asheville can provide telephone assistance to medical professionals collecting evidence. Thirty-three other hospitals said they had kits available to be completed by other medical professionals. Twelve hospitals said they didn’t have SANE nurses or kits. But of those 12, only five have emergency departments. Eight hospitals never responded to WFAE’s inquiries.

This list doesn’t represent the only places survivors can get care.
