How do you decide what\u2019s important to remember? And how do you decide what\u2019s not? And when it comes to creating a list like the one the Charlotte Diocese has committed to release by the end of the year<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">one that includes the names of credibly accused clergy who at some point served at the Charlotte Diocese, how do you begin that process? How do you know when it\u2019s complete?<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">TOM DOYLE:\u00a0<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In our justice system, if you&#8217;re credibly accused of murder, people know about it. You know, your name is put in the newspaper. It&#8217;s not kept secret. The people in North Carolina have just as much a right as anybody else to know what priests who&#8217;ve been employed by that diocese have been known to have sexually violated children, minors or vulnerable adults.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">DELIA:\u00a0<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">That\u2019s Tom Doyle. Some describe him as one of the\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">original<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0whistleblowers of the child abuse scandal in the Catholic Church. Doyle is an expert in Catholic law and a former priest<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. H<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">e walked away from the Catholic Church and the priesthood about 15 years ago, largely in part because of the abuse and the coverup he saw.\u202f\u202f<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">DOYLE:\u00a0<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">When the bishop assigns them to a parish as a pastor, as an assistant pastor, when he assigns them to work in a high school<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">h<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">e&#8217;s telling those people that this man is morally and spiritually fit for this position<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0a<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">nd you can trust him and you can count on the fact that he&#8217;s there for your spiritual and moral guidance.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-184\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/wfae.report\/thelist\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/the-list-black-2.png?resize=300%2C268&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"268\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/wfae.report\/thelist\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/the-list-black-2.png?resize=300%2C268&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/wfae.report\/thelist\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/the-list-black-2.png?resize=768%2C686&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/wfae.report\/thelist\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/the-list-black-2.png?w=1024&amp;ssl=1 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>DELIA:\u00a0<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">He\u2019s dedicated the last 35 years of his career to helping hold the church accountable. He\u2019s routinely used as a court expert in lawsuits. He also uses his skills in other ways. For<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">example, the Capuchin Province of St. Joseph hired Doyle to audit personnel records. He dug through archives and documents to see what the organization\u2019s response to sexual abuse accusations and inappropriate behavior was. The audit went all the way back to the 1880s<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">I<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">t was published in 2013.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">DOYLE:\u00a0<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">So,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0we investigated every file of every Capuchin Franciscan that was still in the order, that had left the order or that had died. We went back looking at files that went back to the 19th century. We also investigated the path of every report that they had ever received on any form of sexual abuse.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">So,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0in North Carolina<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the excuse that i<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">t&#8217;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">s taking all this long is nonsense.\u202f<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">DELIA:\u00a0<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Doyle says the historical audit,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">similar to<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0the one the Charlotte Diocese is undergoing, was completed in about a year. Remember the Charlotte Diocese is young. It was founded in 1972. In May, Bishop Peter\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Jugis<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0stated that the process of reviewing personnel files and other historical files was \u201cset in motion last fall,\u201d meaning fall of 2018<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">This episode, we\u2019re going to explore<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">: H<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ow is this elusive list made? How does the diocese determine if an accusation against a priest is credible? And how do you protect children from the very people who are supposed to be doing the protecting?<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Let\u2019s back up for a minute. There are some dates that are going to be important for you to remember.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Originally the entire state of North Carolina\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">was considered to be<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0under the jurisdiction of the Raleigh Diocese. In 1972, the Charlotte Diocese formed.\u202f<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In 2002, the Boston Globe\u2019s inve<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">sti<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">gative team<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0Spotlight, uncovers the deeply rooted child sex abuse scandal and practice of moving priests from parish to parish when an accusation arose. Media outlets all over the country were rushing to cover the crisis.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">After this explosive story, the church decided it needed to take some action. And in 2002 a Charter for the Protection of Children and Young People was implemented. It\u2019s a fancy term for the\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">guidelines<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0and processes outlined for how to address child abuse accusations, which was lacking before 2002.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">That was a watershed moment. And since 2002, there\u2019s been a push for dioceses to release lists with the names of the credibly accused.\u202f<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">fact,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0the\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">c<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">harter requires every diocese to make public the names of clergy as credible allegations are found against them.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">But Charlotte remains an outlier\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u2014\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">and for reasons that are murky. Currently, the Charlotte Diocese does not have a dedicated spokesperson. David\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Hains<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0was the last one to hold the role and retired less than a year ago.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Hains<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0spoke on behalf of Bishop Peter\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Jugis<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. In various interviews\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Hains<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0did, he offered some insights as to why a list hadn\u2019t been released. He told the\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.charlotteobserver.com\/living\/religion\/article226455770.html\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Charlotte Observer<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0in January 2019 the diocese wasn\u2019t convinced a list was needed for the healing of victims.\u202f<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">DAVID HAINS:\u00a0<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">There is no empirical evidence that publishing a list brings comfort or aid to victims. We obviously have done a lot to harm victims<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">W<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">e don\u2019t want to pile on and do more.\u202f<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Bishop\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Jugis<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0was not made available for an interview. He did say in his statement in May\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">that<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0&#8220;Through<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0my discussions with abuse survivors, I have come to believe that a full airing of abuse from the past is crucial in the healing process for victims and for the entire Church.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">So<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0while you won\u2019t hear directly from the bishop in this series, I can share with you some details about what happens when an accusation is reported to the Charlotte Diocese.\u202f<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Here\u2019s Father Patrick Winslow<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">H<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">is official title is vicar general, which means he\u2019s second in command of the diocese.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">He had laryngitis at the time of this interview.\u202f<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">PATRICK<\/span><\/b><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0WINSLOW:\u00a0<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">First, we notify civil authorities. Second, we engage an internal process<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0which features a review board. The review board comes together from different disciplines that would be expert in investigating these matters and\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">looks into<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0the question of credibility and it comes to a conclusion as to whether or not this allegation has the semblance of truth. Meantime, the moment the allegation comes forward any clergy is set on administrative leave pending the outcome of the review board reports investigation into the matter and finding of credibility. The moment an allegation is found credible<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0it&#8217;s reported to the bishop and he acts on their recommendations.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">DELIA:\u00a0<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">d<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">iocese says the review board currently consists of 11 people<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">N<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">early all are volunteers<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">O<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ne is a member of the clergy.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Members come from different backgrounds<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0\u2014<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0counseling and psychology,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">investigation, business, law, community affairs, and advocacy for the rights of children and victims.\u202fThrough an email<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0the diocese said<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0\u201c<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">T<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">he board interviews abuse victims, clergy and other witnesses and has a professional investigator assigned to them to investigate allegations. Due to the highly sensitive and independent nature of its proceedings, the board\u2019s work is confidential.\u201d\u202f\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The members of this review board are not clearly listed on the website of the diocese. And because the board\u2019s work is confidential, and the diocese declined my request to speak to a member, there\u2019s still a lack of clarity and transparency around how the board conducts its investigation and how it presents findings to the bishop.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">According to the website of the diocese, the bishop makes the final determination on the accused clergy\u2019s ability to minister in the diocese in accordance with the civil law and\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">c<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">hurch law.\u202f<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">And the last point I can tell you with certainty is that the\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">d<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">iocese hired an independent investigative firm to do what they\u2019re calling a historical review of files dating back at least to 1972. That\u2019s\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">similar to<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0what Tom Doyle did for the Capuchin<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Province of St. Joseph in Detroit.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The firm hired by the Charlotte Diocese is U<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">S<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0ISS\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">A<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">gency<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0located in Huntersville. The staff consists of people who worked for the police,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">S<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ecret\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">S<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ervice or DEA. The company\u2019s website says they specialize in various areas<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0including administrative and internal investigations<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0as well as sexual assaults.\u202f<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Right now, the diocese says<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0the agency is going through tens of thousands of pages in more than 1,000 files. That\u2019s what Father Winslow says is taking so much time in publishing the list.\u202f<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">WINSLOW:\u00a0<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">It&#8217;s an enormous task to go through so many files that are in the archives. But to the people that have been entrusted with the responsibility are professional, they&#8217;re qualified, they&#8217;re making amazing progress. We&#8217;re\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">gonna<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0do everything that we can to make sure that all those files can be updated with current information because these things go back so many decades. People may be deceased<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">P<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">eople may have\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">taken action<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0in the past<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0and it&#8217;s important to make sure that they&#8217;re updated. Because according to Tom Doyle<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0who has done this type of work before, if you know what you\u2019re looking for, it shouldn\u2019t take too long.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">DOYLE:\u00a0<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">You know, if you&#8217;ve got a team of people that know what they&#8217;re doing and know what to look for, and you don&#8217;t have to be an Einstein to figure out what to look for. But what they need to be told is that a lot of times the bishops, they most of the time when they&#8217;re referring to sexual abuse<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0they use code language<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0\u2014<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0coded words. They don&#8217;t come right out and say,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&#8220;F<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ather so-and-so anally raped a 12<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&#8211;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">year<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&#8211;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">old boy.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&#8220;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0They&#8217;ll say nonsense like,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">y<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ou know,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&#8220;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">improper touches<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&#8220;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0or\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&#8220;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">inappropriate affection<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&#8220;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0or crap like that. There&#8217;s a whole lexicon of stuff that they use.\u202f<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">DELIA:\u00a0<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Basically<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0Doyle says, you need someone who can read the language of the Catholic Church. If you don\u2019t have someone who knows how to translate, how can you expect to get an accurate list?<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Another part of the problem, Doyle says, is consistency.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">D<\/span><\/b><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">OYLE:\u00a0<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The bishop is basically the monarch in his diocese. One of the major problems with this issue<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0\u2014<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0across the board with this\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">particular issue<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0\u2014<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0is that there&#8217;s no consistent definition of what it means to be credibly accused. Now, that can mean\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">a number of<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0things. It can be a broad spectrum. What does it mean to be credibly accused?<\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u202f<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">DELIA:\u00a0<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The diocese says if an accusation is found to be credible, that\u2019s\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">not<\/span><b><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the same thing as a finding of guilt. Bu<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">t\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">there are consequences. The accused will be removed from ministry and included on the credibly accused list published by the diocese. The accusation should be reported publicly<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0including in the Catholic News Herald<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0\u2014\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the paper of the diocese<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0\u2014<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0and parishes should be informed.\u202f<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">So<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0even though the diocese isn\u2019t officially calling the credibly accused person guilty, they in some ways are treated as such.\u202f<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">I mentioned earlier that Tom Doyle is sometimes used as a court expert when lawsuits are filed against various dioceses. Charlotte\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">a<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ttorney Seth\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Langson<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0who represents sex abuse survivors, has used Doyle\u2019s services before.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Langson<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0represented Anthony from Episode 1 when he attempted to file a civil suit against Richard Farwell and the Charlotte Diocese in 2011. That lawsuit was ultimately dismissed due to statute of limitations.\u202f<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Langson<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0says the secrecy around how the Charlotte Diocese works is nothing new to him.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Langson<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0doesn\u2019t trust the church and questions why the diocese is taking so long to publish the list<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0\u2014\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">and also<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">if this independent investigative firm is the right one for the job.\u202f<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">SETH LANGSON:\u00a0<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">I wonder what experience they\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">actually have<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0doing church cases or what other investigations they&#8217;ve done.\u202f<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">DELIA:\u00a0<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Langson<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0has taken on multiple civil lawsuits against the Charlotte Diocese. Because of that, he\u2019s seen a lot of documents.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Langson<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0says some of the documents contain information on allegations going back to the 1980s, but those documents are now sealed.\u202f<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">L<\/span><\/b><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ANGSON:\u00a0<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">They were ordered by the court after they objected to giving me names of priests who had been accused of sexual misconduct with a\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">minor<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0I<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0think it was going back to 1980. I\u2019ve got information on that. I can&#8217;t say anything about who&#8217;s in\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">that<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0whose<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0papers I saw, what names I learned.\u202fAs far as I know<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0I&#8217;m the only person outside of the Charlotte\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">D<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">iocese who&#8217;s ever seen this information. You know<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0I&#8217;m not getting younger and it&#8217;s very frustrating. I feel like other people need to know.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">DELIA:\u00a0<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Point being,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Langson<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0says, he\u2019s seen a lot. And he\u2019s been waiting<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0\u2014<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0not only for himself but for his former clients, to see who is on the list and how it measures up.\u202f<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">LANGSON:\u00a0<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">I&#8217;ll be very surprised if I don&#8217;t know of one or more names of priests who&#8217;ve had what I think are credible accusations that aren&#8217;t on the list.\u202f<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">DELIA:\u00a0<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Langson\u2019s<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0area of expertise is child sex abuse cases. And in that line of work, there\u2019s a lot of heartbreak<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0\u2014<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">one<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0because of the nature of the cases<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0but also there are a\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">lot of<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> cases he says he has to turn away because of the statute of limitations.\u202f<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">But\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Langson<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0was able to reach a settlement with the Charlotte Diocese in one case. It\u2019s what he calls a success story<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0\u2014 n<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ot just because they were able to settle with the<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0d<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">iocese for $1 million but because the abuser ended up behind bars.\u202f<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">LANGSON:<\/span><\/b><b><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Yeah,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0it&#8217;s one success story in many ways.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The client<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0\u2014\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">you never get rid<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0of the damage, to cope with the damage better than probably than almost any other client I&#8217;ve had in my career.\u202f<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Charlotte Attorney Seth\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Langson<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0has one client\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">in particular that<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0found success going up against the Charlotte Diocese.\u202f<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">That client was 35-year-old Robby Price<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0who now lives in Florida<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0I reached him via Skype. Price grew up in Charlotte along with his\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">four<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0sisters.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">PRICE<\/span><\/b><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">:\u00a0<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Really close<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0with my siblings and so we always played together and play games<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, b<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">oard games,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&#8220;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Monopoly.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&#8220;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">So,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0it was just a fun childhood. Until that point.\u202f<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">DELIA:\u00a0<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Church was important to Price and his family. He was an altar boy at St. Matthew Catholic Church and attended youth group weekly.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Church was so ingrained in his family\u2019s life that when he needed to have a biopsy on a swollen lymph gland, Price\u2019s mother asked Robert\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Yurgel<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, a priest assigned to St. Matthew<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0to come to the hospital and pray for the family. The year was 1999. Price was 14.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">From then on,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Yurgel<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0took a special interest in Price<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, w<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">hich<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0from the outside, didn\u2019t appear suspicious.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">PRICE<\/span><\/b><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">:\u00a0<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">It looked like a good thing to have somebody who&#8217;s a clergy, a man of God, guide with my parents, a kid through his early teenage years<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.\u202f<\/span><\/i><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">DELIA:\u00a0<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">But things quickly took a turn with\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Yurgel<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. It started with hugs that lasted too long.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&#8220;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Indecent<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&#8220;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0is the word Price used to describe them.\u202f<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">PRICE<\/span><\/b><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">:\u00a0<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Being someone who always looked up to priests and those in the church as extensions of God and those whom we obey and we try to live our lives like, I didn&#8217;t know if it was right or wrong or what I should be doing. No child should ever have to be put into the question of whether this was right or wrong. But that&#8217;s the position in which I was forced into by this man.\u202f<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">DELIA:\u00a0<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">According to Price and the civil lawsuit, Price\u2019s family had no idea the abuse was going on. The family held\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Yurgel<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0in high regard and trusted him completely. Price\u2019s parents would let\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Yurgel<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0pick Price up and drop him off at youth group.\u202f<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">That alone time in the car, Price said, was when\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Yurgel<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0molested him<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0and it continued inside the church in a room behind the altar. And if I didn&#8217;t do those\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">things,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0he would<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0\u2014<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0he would get upset and he would start questioning whether I cared about him. And<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0you know<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0that was another form of manipulation of trying to portray feelings or to kind of take the<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0I&#8217;m assuming<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0guilt off with him<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">you know<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0maybe this child wants it<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0which<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0obviously<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0a child could never consent to something like that.<\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u202f<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">DELIA:\u00a0<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Robby inadvertently sent one such email to a diocese employee<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0M<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">J<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0Dawson<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0on Oct<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. 6<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, 1999. In the email<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0Price thanked\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Yurgel<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0for talking to him<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">H<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">e also wrote \u201cI LOVE YOU\u201d in all capital letters. The lawsuit says\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Yurgel<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0was distressed about this email being sent to the unintended person and instructed Robby Price to send another email to Dawson asking her not to read it. But Dawson did<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, a<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">nd she forwarded\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">both of the emails<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0to her supervisor, a woman named Pat Tomlinson<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0who was also concerned about the context of the emails. Tomlinson passed the emails on to a pastor. According to the lawsuit, none of the adults reported their concerns to authorities and no investigation into any kind of sexual abuse was conducted.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Robert\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Yurgel<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0was transferred from Charlotte to New Jersey that same month. As we know from the Boston Globe\u2019s reporting<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0this was a common practice back then.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Having\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Yurgel<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0out of state changed things for Robby Price. He didn\u2019t want anything to do with\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Yurgel<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. The lawsuit says Price was tormented by the abuse by that point.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Yurgel<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0was still trying to communicate with Price through email<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0and Price says he would delete the messages. Even still,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Yurgel<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0continued to stay in touch with Price\u2019s family, even speaking with Robby Price\u2019s mother on the phone occasionally.\u202f<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Fast<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&#8211;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">forward to Thanksgiving 2007<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0Price is around 21 years old. The trauma from the abuse had built to a boiling point in Price. What can we do to help?<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&#8220;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0Which was something that\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Yurgel<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0always said would never happen<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">H<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">e would always tell me that<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0my<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0family would be upset with me or would<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">n&#8217;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">t believe me and they would be mad at\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">me<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">and<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0you know<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0through my sister&#8217;s actions showed me that that was not accurate<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0that that was another form of manipulation that he was using to hide his misdeeds.\u202f<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">DELIA:\u00a0<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">His family got in touch with Seth\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Langson<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, who helped Price connect with the Mecklenburg County\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">D<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">istrict\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">A<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ttorney&#8217;s\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">O<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ffice and the police. A criminal investigation was opened. As part of the investigation, Price called\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Yurgel<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0and spoke to him for the first time in years to try and get him to confess with police officers listening. He sounded very timid. He served almost\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">eight<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0years in prison and is registered as a sex offender.\u202f\u202f<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Yurgel<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> was removed from ministry in 2008. The Charlotte Diocese says it was unaware of any allegations of abuse until 2008 when\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Yurgel<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0was arrested in New Jersey.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">I reached out to\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Yurgel<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0via phone, email and certified mail to alert him of this series. Besides a postal confirmation that he received my letter, I never heard back from him.\u202f<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The day of\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Yurgel\u2019s<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0criminal sentencing, Price addressed the court and\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Yurgel<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.\u202f<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">PRICE<\/span><\/b><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">:\u00a0<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The statement was more so about me reclaiming my life and saying something to the man who\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">had\u202fessentially<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0ruined my childhood for me and ruined religion for me and trust issues that I should have never had to deal with. And so I wanted to ensure that I could tell\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Yurgel<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0that this was me taking back my life<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0and I wanted not only everybody in the courtroom that day but anybody who is reading an article to know that he&#8217;s a child molester<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0he needs to be in prison<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0and he should be punished for everything that he\u2019s done. In order to hold back the tears and all the emotion<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0I remember just gripping that piece of paper that I had written\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">all of<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0my thoughts and my feelings and my statement on. I remember looking over at him at one point before and after I had read it. And then I remember very distinctly them handcuffing him which<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">was a moment that I&#8217;ll never forget.\u202f<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">DELIA:\u00a0<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">After the criminal proceedings, Price<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0with the help of his lawyer<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0Seth\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Langson<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, filed a civil suit. That resulted in a <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">$<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">1 million<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">settlement with the Charlotte Diocese. It was important to pursue a lawsuit<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0Price said, to hold the Catholic Church accountable<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0\u2014<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">t<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">o make sure as many people as possible knew about the abuse and Robert\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Yurgel\u2019s<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0name and the name of the Charlotte Diocese.\u202f<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Robby Price has a life he loves now. The abuse is still something that sits with me every day. I go to therapy and discuss aspects of what happened to me or the ramifications of what happened to me to this day. The list in a way is a warning. It\u2019s the sex offender registry.\u202f<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Price gets some comfort making sure\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Yurgel<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0is on that list and still more than a thousand miles away<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, b<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ecause even though Price has his a new life and is processing his trauma with the help of a therapist, the memory of the abuse isn\u2019t ever going to completely go away<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0\u2014 l<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ike when\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Yurgel<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0was released from prison in 2016. Out of all the days of the year\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Yurgel<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0could have been released, it fell on Price\u2019s birthday.
